CONTRACT: Little Bushywarren Copse
CLIENT: Onyx Hampshire
PRINCIPAL CONTRACTOR: Dyer & Butler Limited
DATE COMPLETED : October 2004
Project Outline
Onyx Hampshire is extending the Little Bushywarren Copse green waste facility as part of Project Integra with Hampshire County Council. The requirement for the extension of the existing site arises principally to meet the forecast growth in green waste arisings. The operational area will comprise an impermeable pavement of 40,000m², constructed in Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC).
Pavement Details
The pavement consists of a 200mm RCC slab on a cement and lime treated foundation, overlaid with a 50mm granular drainage layer. The pavement drains to a concrete channel which outfalls to a purpose built reinforced concrete lagoon.
Construction Programme
Roller Compacted Concrete Company constructed the RCC slab over a 20 day programme laying up to 1,700 tonnes of material in a shift. The speed of the paving operation enabled progress to be maintained, despite lost time for inclement weather.
Concrete Production
The RCC material was mixed on site by Sitebatch Technologies using one of its high output continuous mixing plants, and transported to the paver in concrete tipper trucks.
Paving
Needham & Cullen Road Services laid the RCC using a tracked paver with high compaction screed. Compaction was completed by vibratory steel drum and pneumatically tyred rollers.
Quality Control
The concrete production was carried out under the company’s BSI registered quality assurance system. Field testing was carried out by Bureau Veritas and included testing for strength, density and surface regularity.
Roller Compacted Concrete
RCC provided a cost effective solution to the pavement requirements for this composting facility, with superior strength and durability characteristics to conventional pavement quality concrete. Flexural strengths averaging 6N/mm² were achieved at 28 days
RCC is not a new material; it is a well established material used in a different way. Usage in North America extends back to the seventies and includes log handling facilities in Canada and container terminals in the United States.
The principal advantages of RCC are derived from the construction process. Production costs are lower because of the speed of construction; there is no reinforcement and a low cement ratio, which combine to give RCC a significant cost advantage of conventional pavement quality concrete. In addition, the pavement is fully recyclable.
