CONTRACT: Asbourne Composting Facility
CLIENT: Longcliffe Quarries/Vital Earth
PRINCIPAL CONTRACTOR: Whitehouse Construction Ltd
DATE COMPLETED: August 2006
Project Outline
The project comprised a maturation building and external hardstandings for the processing of green waste by composting and the production of a bagged product for distribution. Roller compacted concrete was selected as the material for both the internal and external slabs. For programming reasons, the building was erected first and the RCC floor was paved at the same time as the external hardstandings
Pavement Details
Both the hardstanding pavement and the building floor consisted of a 200mm RCC slab on Type 1 granular sub-base foundation.
Part of the hardstanding overlaid the existing concrete runway from the old World War 2 airfield on the site at Ashbourne.
Construction Programme
The project programme was dictated by the structural steel and cladding works, and it was necessary to lay the RCC after the buiding had been erected. This while unusual for RCC, was possible in this case due to the large 30m spans of the portal frames and the 90m length of the building. Daily output was 2000 sq.metres.
Concrete Production
The RCC material was mixed on site using a high output continuous mixing plant and transported to the paver in 25t dump trucks. Longcliffe Quarries Ltd provided specially graded aggregate from their plant at Longcliffe, Derbyshire.
Paving
The RCC was laid using a tracked paver with high compaction screed. Compaction was completed by vibratory steel drum and pneumatically tyred rollers. Curing agent was spray applied.
Quality Control
The concrete production was carried out under the company’s BSI registered quality assurance system. Field testing was carried out by Enverity and included testing for flexural and compressive strengths, and in-situ density.
